Monitoring fish migration in rivers is becoming increasily important. The numbers of fish annually returning, fish size and peak of migration are examples of parameters that are relevant to fish management.
Hydroacoustics has become an established method for fish monitoring in rivers.
A normal experimental setup is to install the echo sounder transducer on mount. The transducer orientation is controlled using a pan-tilt unit operated by a joy-stick. This installation is placed into the river with the acoustic beam pointing from one riverbank towards the other. Fish swimming through the acoustic beam will be recorded and counted, and their size and swimming speed can be analysed.
The Sonar 5 post-processing software is specifically designed to identify and count fish tracks.
