Using the HUGIN AUV for fishery research purposes
The HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) manufactured by Kongsberg Maritime is used for many offshore applications, including fisheries research.
The HUGIN operates autonomously or operator supervised for up to 60 hours down to 4000 m water depth using inertial navigation. EK60 echo sounders onboard the Hugin are controlled, and data are transferred, via an acoustic telemetry link to the research vessel.
In the mid-eighties, Kongsberg Maritime developed a small Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for technology and test purposes. In 1995 the HUGIN project was started as a cooperation between Statoil, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), Norsk Undervannsintervensjon (NUI) and KONGSBERG. Today, Kongsberg Maritime lead the AUV market with the HUGIN concept.
Because the HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicles can function without tethers, cables, or remote control, they have a multitude of applications in oceanography, environmental monitoring, underwater resource studies and fishery research. A key element in the HUGIN concept is the application of a common technology that makes the systems adaptable for navy and commercial applications. The modular design allows different payload configurations, depending on the customers needs.
